In crimson colour, the Rabbit Zodiac Lunar New Year was again greeted with splendour. Students and teachers alike gathered to present skits, dramas, songs and dances all to exhibit their love for creativity and expressions of joy for the season.
Robed under the Lion head, the year 10 students magnificently tried their Lion Dance stunt albeit hopping around with their two left feet. It was a refreshing act when they went around distributing the red packets of candies; not money!
Years 1 to 4 wowed us with their renditions of the Lunar Season; in particular the evergreen “kongxi, kongxi” song. Singing in action with a drama in it, Year 1 Love and 2 Peace captured our spirits and hearts as the mesmerised audience put their hands together in unison.
Skits followed next; acted by the Year 6 Charity, Years 7 Fortitude and Forbearance; one of which was based on The Great Zodiac Race naming all the zodiac animals; pointing out that the Vietnamese honor the cat instead of the rabbit, and the buffalo instead of the ox.
We thought year 8 Faithfulness took great effort in dressing up for the umbrella dance , perhaps emulating the Chinese in Japan celebrating the season. Surely, the boys and girls were up to it.
A musical piece using the piano and violin performed by Elisa and Ruen Tong added variety. Later the duet; Galvin and Robynn sang their best in a Mandarin song in good tempo and beat.
The celebration culminated in a closing dance by Year 11 students to the tune of “O, my mother” which left a sweet after taste that was too mesmerising. It was a dance that managed to coax all in the class to participate and what wonderful choreography.
Dressed in red, the students enjoyed the hard work of the performers and it is an understatement to say that they are already looking forward to next year’s celebration.
Happy Lunar New Year all!
