The Reading week was filled with activities that stimulated their interest for books. Students acted out roles from the characters depicted in the selected books and were they good! It was with much fun as they dressed up for the occasion . Some year 2 students had their “hats off”; wearing hats to promote reading.
Unscrambling words, Caption writing, Read aloud, Scavenger hunting and many other reading related activities were promoted at the same time.
It is challenging leading students to hold, read and love books with so many other attractions on their plate especially that in the digital realm. We will continue to find ways and means to promote the habit and hopefully it “maketh a man” out of them.
Perhaps, introducing a new book a week over assembly can do a little trick and blogging on what you have read to share is a possibility. What about a mobile library? Junk sales? Whatever it may take, the teachers will need to concur and put their heads together for that magic touch.
Finding a solution to move the reluctant reader is our immediate ambition indeed.
